Every Child is a Treasure, Every Parent a Key!
DES PTO - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is the PTO?
The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) is a group of parents, guardians, teachers, and staff working together to support our school. We plan events, raise funds, and create opportunities that enrich our children’s educational experience.
What is the difference between a PTO and a PTA?
A PTA (Parent Teacher Association) is part of a national organization with local and state chapters. Membership dues support both the local school and the national PTA, and the group follows national bylaws with a strong emphasis on advocacy.
A PTO (Parent Teacher Organization) is independent and school-based. All funds raised stay in the school, and the group sets its own bylaws and priorities, usually focusing on local needs such as fundraising, family events, and teacher support.
Do I have to pay to join?
Yes, the PTO has a small annual membership fee of $20 per adult and $15 for every teacher, staff and administration at the school. Every dollar collected goes directly toward programs, events, and activities that benefit our students and teachers.
Why do I have to renew my PTO membership every year?
Annual membership dues are essential to sustaining the PTO’s programs and events. Each year we hold a membership drive to ensure we have the resources and voices we need to support our school. Register here: Join the DES PTO. Joining is one of the simplest ways to show your support.
Can anyone come to a PTO meeting?
Yes! Every parent, guardian, or caregiver is welcome. At our meetings, we discuss upcoming events, budgets, safety updates, and other relevant PTO news. Some meetings are held in the mornings, and others in the evenings to accommodate schedules. Please join us!
Will I be required to volunteer if I join the PTO or attend a meeting?
No! Membership simply shows your support and belief in what we’re doing. You will not be assigned a job, but once you hear about the exciting projects and the impact volunteers make, you may want to join in. We encourage all voices, new families, longtime families, parents from every grade, to be part of the conversation.
What does the PTO sponsor at the school?
The PTO sponsors a wide variety of programs and events throughout the year, including the Holiday Store, Yearbook, monthly i-ready incentives, school events such as dances, the Candy Crawl, talent shows, and 5th grade graduation support. We also fund social-emotional learning initiatives, provide supplies, support spirit shirts, host pizza parties for students, and much more.
What does the PTO do?
We host family events, raise funds for enrichment opportunities, support teachers, celebrate staff, and provide resources that directly benefit students. From classroom supplies to school-wide events, the PTO makes a difference.
What are the benefits of joining the PTO?

Joining the PTO means more than just becoming a member, you’re making a difference for your child, their classmates, and our entire school. Membership keeps you informed about events and programs, gives you a voice in decisions that impact our kids, and ensures your support goes directly back into the school. It’s also a chance to build connections with families, teachers, and staff while strengthening our school community.
PTO members enjoy special perks like early access to event tickets, savings on spirit wear, and opportunities to promote local businesses. Members are recognized throughout the year, invited to appreciation events, and can take advantage of community discounts. PTO also offers leadership opportunities, whether serving on the board, chairing a committee, or becoming a room parent. Every membership helps fund projects that bring more resources and experiences to our children.
How do I volunteer?
Volunteering is simple and fun! You can help in many ways—setting up for events, donating supplies, supporting classroom activities, or serving on a committee. Whether you have one hour or more to give, your contribution makes a difference. Sign up to be a volunteer using the Volunteer Interest Form.
How do I become a Room Parent?
Room Parents play a vital role in supporting teachers and creating strong classroom communities. They often help coordinate class events, organize donations, and keep parents informed. Each teacher has their own guidelines, but stepping into this role is a wonderful way to be part of your child’s educational journey. Sign up on the Volunteer Interest Form.
Do I have to volunteer if I join?
Not at all. Joining does not require a volunteer commitment. We always welcome and need extra hands, but membership alone helps support the PTO’s work.
Can grandparents or other family members join?
Yes! Anyone who wants to support our school community—grandparents, aunts, uncles, neighbors—is welcome to join the PTO. So encourage your village to sign up!
How does the PTO raise money?
Through membership, fundraisers, events, and donations. Every dollar raised goes right back into programs and resources for our school.
How do I stay updated?
We share updates through email, social media, flyers, and the school website. Be sure to join our Bands communication channels so you don’t miss announcements and opportunities.
